課程概述 |
This course will proceed as several "projects" that help the students use English in the real world:
(I) How to create an academic plan: how to design your own coursework tailored to your career goals (in an ideal world), how to "dream big" and to talk about it
(II) How to debate a controversial issue: how to present your ideas clearly, how to bring your vocabulary to the next level
(III) How to understand and write a review (of movies, consumer products, institutions, etc.): how to distinguish between formal and informal language, how to pick up and make use of set phrases
(IV) How to give an oral presentation
Course materials consist of news articles, websites of leading academic institutions, and listening exercises.
The class will be conducted in English. The syllabus will be provided in the first class meeting. |

Course requirements include three short essays, midterm exam (vocabulary & grammar test), and an oral presentation, in addition to regular attendance, active participation in class, and an individual session with the TA. |

Preparation and participation.
Midterm exam: a vocabulary and grammar test covering all the reading and listening materials used in class.
Three essays, each of 250-450 words.
Oral presentation at the end of the semester.
